Dr. Huang’s research is focused on the interactions between viruses and stem cells.  Stem cells residing in tissues are thought to be responsible for the repair mechanism in various organs. Recent reports have showed that stem cells can be infected by pathogens such as bacteria and viruses and with pathological sequelae.  Her lab has identified several stem cell lines which were especially semsitive to specific virus attack. The primary objective of her studies is to examine the effects of viral infection on target stem cells and elucidate the possible pathological mechanisms.
